Your first 30 days as a tax preparer

Build a practical foundation for your training, tools and first client conversations.

Week 1: define your starting point

Begin by writing down your current experience, the types of clients you expect to serve and the areas you need to learn. Choose a realistic scope for your first season. Being clear about your limits helps you identify when to ask for guidance or refer a more complex situation to an experienced professional.

Week 2: practice complete examples

Use fictional training scenarios to practice the full preparation workflow. Start with intake, organize the information, enter the details, review the results and explain the next steps. Keep a learning log of questions and errors. Repeating a complete example is more useful than simply becoming familiar with software screens.

Week 3: organize your client process

Create an intake checklist, a document request template and a method for tracking missing information. Decide how you will explain your fees and communicate progress. Establish appropriate ways to receive and store client records before accepting sensitive information. Test the process with fictional data rather than a real client's documents.

Week 4: rehearse and review

Run a mock appointment from the first enquiry through the final review. Notice where instructions are unclear or steps are missing. Confirm the registrations and requirements that apply to your work before serving clients. Your goal for the first month is a repeatable process supported by learning, not a promise of immediate expertise.
