Review the previous season
Write down the parts of your workflow that caused delays or repeated questions. Look at intake, document collection, review and communication separately. Choose a few practical improvements rather than attempting to replace every system at once. A small change that removes recurring confusion can make a meaningful difference.
Refresh your knowledge
Set aside time for training and review the official guidance relevant to the upcoming filing season. Do not assume that a prior-year example applies unchanged. Keep a list of questions and resolve them through appropriate sources or experienced guidance before you encounter the same issue in a client engagement.
Test your tools
Check software access, updates, backups and the method you use to exchange documents. Review who can access client information and remove access that is no longer needed. Test your website's enquiry links and forms. Use fictional information for testing so preparation work does not unnecessarily expose client records.
Prepare your communication
Update your document request templates, appointment instructions and service descriptions. Review your capacity and leave room for questions and review time. Contact clients through the channels they have agreed to use. January should begin with a clear operating plan, while actual filing dates and current requirements should always be checked with official sources.
